Update: Taxi Crashes into Chevy Chase Pavilion

A taxi driver caused an accident on Tuesday morning, Nov. 29, when he ran a red light, damaging four cars (including two that had to be towed away) and sending one person to the hospital. The cab itself ended up on the steps of the Chevy Chase Pavilion.

The driver of the Barwood taxi that crashed into the front steps of the Chevy Chase Pavilion at about 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, is at fault for causing the accident, according to a police report issued late last week.

The taxi was traveling eastbound on Western Avenue when it ran a red light through the intersection of Western and Wisconsin avenues.

As it crossed the intersection, it hit a car traveling south on Wisconsin Avenue. The southbound-traveling car—which was legally passing through the intersection on a green light—then, in turn, hit two additional vehicles, which were traveling north on Wisconsin Avenue through the intersection, according to the police report issued by the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, DC.

That southbound-traveling car ended up coming to a stop in an eastward-facing direction in the middle of the intersection, giving the impression that the car's driver had attempted to make an illegal left turn. But, according to the police report, that was not the case. That driver was innocent.

After causing the accident, the taxi driver first accelerated through the intersection, then crashed into the front steps of the Chevy Chase Pavilion on the other side of the intersection, according to the police report.

The taxi driver was issued a notice of infraction. No alcohol was involved in the crash.

Both the taxi and one of the two vehicles that had been traveling north on Wisconsin Avenue were towed away from the scene of the accident.

The driver of the northbound-traveling car that was towed was taken to the Georgetown University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident backed up traffic in all directions from the Friendship Heights intersection on the Maryland-DC border, according to Todd Jasper, a Chevy Chase resident and federal emergency consultant.

The accident was originally reported on dcist.com.
